A guide for women: how to protect your rights in marriage, family, and everyday life in Uzbekistan

Marriage contract
This can be concluded either before the wedding or during the marriage. It only covers property relations. It allows you to determine in advance what property will remain with each party after the divorce and what property will not be considered joint property.

Personal property
By law, property that you have received as a gift or inheritance is not divided. It is considered personal and remains solely yours. Therefore, it is better to make large purchases through gifts. For example, you can give money to your parents so that they can buy a home and register it as a gift to you. This is your safety net. If your husband buys you a car or a house, you can directly ask him to register it as a gift. If he is confident in himself and in the relationship, there will be no problems with this.

Your husband's property acquired before marriage
If your spouse had an apartment or house before marriage, it is considered his personal property. But if joint money was invested in this property during the marriage, for example, for major repairs, it may be recognized as joint property. It is important to keep receipts and documents for materials and work — this is proof that the repairs were made during the marriage.

Property purchased with a loan
If an apartment, car, or other property was purchased before the marriage but the loan for it is being paid off during the marriage, this property is considered joint property and is subject to division in the event of a divorce.

Housing during divorce
If you are registered or have lived in your husband's apartment (or even his mother's apartment) for a long time, no one has the right to simply throw you and your children out onto the street. In the event of a conflict or divorce, you can go to court and demand that you be allocated living space. No one can deprive you and your children of housing. If living together is impossible, your husband or his family is obliged to provide you and your children with other housing or pay your rent.

Alimony for the wife
If after the divorce you do not have a job, work experience, education, or if you have an illness/disability that prevents you from working, you have the right to go to court and demand alimony not only for the children, but also for your own maintenance. Your husband is obliged to pay it.
